How to Measure Your Room for Furniture (Free Checklist)
To measure a room for furniture, record the room’s length and width, mark the location of doors, windows, and outlets, plan your walkways (leave about 18 inches to walk through), and measure every doorway and hallway the furniture must pass through before you buy. Use this checklist so your new pieces fit perfectly the first time.
What you’ll need
- A tape measure (or a laser measure)
- Paper and pen, or your phone’s notes app
- Painter’s tape to mock out furniture footprints on the floor
Step by step
- Measure the room: length, width, and ceiling height.
- Mark fixed features: windows, doors, radiators, vents, and outlets.
- Plan walkways: leave about 18 inches for main paths and 30–36 inches for high-traffic lanes.
- Tape it out: outline the furniture’s footprint on the floor to see how it feels before you buy.
Don’t forget doorways and delivery paths
The most common furniture mistake is buying a piece that won’t fit through the door. Before you buy a sofa or sectional, measure the width of every doorway, hallway, staircase, and elevator it must pass through. If it’s a tight fit, measure diagonally too — many pieces can angle through.
Common furniture size cheat sheet
- Standard sofa: about 72–84 in wide
- Loveseat: about 58–64 in wide
- Sectional: about 95–115 in per side
- Queen bed: 60 x 80 in (plus frame)
- King bed: 76 x 80 in (plus frame)
- Dining table (seats 6): about 60–72 in long
